inFAMOUS 2 - Cole MacGrath

"It's always somethin'....."

Update 7/8 June 2011:
Majorly edited/overhauled his face and especially eyes. I just had to, they look really different in the cover of the game and it was really bugging me. Especially when the cover is staring me down constantly as I put it up on display. Also added a lot of new details that was from the cover. Light reflection on his left side of his face/hair (your right), made his stubble area darker, also his scar a tad clearer, darker. The cover obviously uses a newer rendered version of Cole, hence there's quite a bit of difference. His tattoo on his arm also changed, but you can hardly see it in my portrait, so I didn't change it. Glad I "revamped" my portrait of Cole, looks hella better now! (If anyone saved my previous version of Cole, look at it.. you're bound to laugh. I did.)


It's Cole MacGrath from inFamous 2! One of my favourite games, can't wait for inFamous 2 to arrive!! I already pre-ordered my Hero Edition... heheh. Pretty obvious to draw Cole. I mean because the game is coming on June 7, so I really wanted to get Cole done before then, a little gift/homage to the game series if you will!!


Reference:
Well, if you all already noticed, it's basically Cole from the cover of inFamous 2. I thought of using his in-game model perhaps instead, as I wasn't loving the picture when I first saw it.

To be honest, I actually LIKED his initial design (Brace for crazy inFamous fans shooting electricity at me).. I mean seriously, he didn't look all that bad, with his hair and all. He looked a lot younger. However, I'm still good with his face back to when he looked like in inFamous. I mean, it IS Cole after all right? Kinda sad that they threw a huge scar on his face. Poor ol' Cole! Lol, oh well, guess he looks much more badass now. Love the cool tribal tats as well.

Anyway, I decided to use that inFamous 2 Cole picture as reference. It was starting to grow on me, and now I find that it looks really awesome! I used that one where the backdrop is New Marais, so the entire portrait is a tad different from the actual cover. Everything is a lot brighter, and there's a tad difference in the direction of the electricity.


Face:
Wasn't hard to do Cole's face. Made sure to get his scar right. Kinda got confused with his neck on the right for a second, thought one of the lines was the start of his shirt when it was still his neck. Fixed it though. Lol.

Hair:
Okay, his hair was obviously NUTS to do. Each strand of hair is VERY short. I think I drew about a 1000 strands of hair on his head.... And there was quite a few dots as well. Pointillism perhaps? Hah.

Background:
Before starting on the portrait, I thought about whether or not to do the background. I mean, you see it right now, it's pretty crazy. Decided to do it cos it'll make the portrait look a lot better. It's basically New Marais behind Cole. Some building on the top right. The clock tower at the left. The left was pretty hard/confusing to do. After all, it was sort of out of focus, and blurred, so details were hard to see. Kinda messy too.

Electricity:
I found it FUN to do Cole's electricity all over the place. I mean it's pretty cool, to recreate it, seeing it slowly appear and such. Kept the shape and direction of it close to the ref.


So that's Cole MacGrath for ya! Can't wait for inFamous 2 seriously!!! Wahoo June 7!
